I know I'm a little late on this but I've suddenly gotten the desire to argue on everything education related.
PM suggests schools go single session to keep kids safe
I am totally against the idea of staying back in school up until 4pm. Firstly, does the government even know how disgusting it is to have to stay back in school until 4pm? It's hot, dirty and extremely uncomfortable in pinafores! And since my school is a mission school, not a lot of funds are allocated for us. We do not get brand new tables/chairs every so often like PFS or BJ. The tables in our Pure Science labs were around since the 1970s! (I know this because I was talking to an ex-student of MGS and she just commented on how little the labs have changed)
Just imagine that!
That brings me to my first point: Cleanliness.
How are we to shower? To keep clean? I'm not being OCD I'm just being concerned because when I feel hot and disgusting it never works to sit and study. And for goodness sake. Toilets in school are really really disgusting. Just how are we to "hold" until 4pm every day? It's like promoting hazardous lifestyles from school.
And school is very tiring. Forcing us to stay back until 4pm every day will make us sleep in between classes. Lately, I've been taking naps in the afternoon because school is exhausting.
And, I'm sorry Pak Lah, I know your intentions are good but I think pushing the responsibilities of parenthood to teachers isn't going to solve anything. Instead I sincerely think that your plan of locking students in jail school is just going to cause the very opposite of your goal.
Take a look at my own school. It has a faculty of approximately 40 teachers. The enrollment is approximately 640 students. That's a ratio of 1 teacher to 16 students.
Since this move is in context with the Nurin case, if one parent cannot control a single child, how are you going to expect one teacher to nurture, discipline and teach 16 children? Logically, it does not make any sense. And Nurin went missing at NIGHT.
Nurin, a student of Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Desa Setapak, went missing after going to a night market near her house in Section 1, Wangsa Maju, on Aug 20.
The girl's body was found stuffed in a sports bag left in front of a shoplot, bearing evidence of sexual abuse.
I do not see the connection AT ALL.
I digress.
And the problem with this is that no one asked the opinions of students. It's like we are incapable of voicing out opinions? Although I agree there are some
On to my next point.
The whole point of giving birth is to endure parenthood. Notice how intricate and perfect Nature is? How everything balances on it's own? How it has matured and grown to an equilibrium(of course you exclude the actions of mankind)?
Animals nurture their young. They do not chuck their young ones to daycare center. (I suppose you could argue on the fact that animals do not have the intellect like we do but if even animals are more well-behaved as compared to rapist/serialkillers/psychpaths..etc. perhaps we should learn a thing or two from nature after all it is clear that parents teach all)
To those of you who have good radars, I'm sure you would have heard of this particular case of students running out of schools to cyber cafes in the midst of lessons. It was a police case. I know some of these people personally. And when I asked them why they did it they said it was because school is boring and really agonizing. More discipline cases are going to rise if this notion is taken.
The whole notion is crazy actually. For once, stop trying to solve problems by making us students guinea pigs. (Take it out on adults for once!) Learning moral, civics... now staying back until 4pm? Not every problem can be solved by implementing it through education.
How has moral benefited the society?
What makes you think that making us stay back until so late will have a different effect?
And besides, BOTH my parents are at home. Dad works from home. Mom is a housewife. Not all families have parents away at work.

How right you are
Our classrooms are not air-conditioned. So I totally agree with you that it's hot, dirty and extremely uncomfortable in this hot, humid climate of us until 4.00pm. How can one concentrate ?
Moreover, can the teachers' contributions be beneficial every day until 4pm ? What I know is that after normal school hours, the students are left to do their 'homework'or left on their own until 4pm
4pm is not a big problem to be honest. As long as the curriculum is much more interesting than rot learning of the god knows how many nilai-nilai in pendidikan moral. As for cleanliness, it's quite hard to blame anyone since most of the public amenities in most schools are vandalised and abused by the students themselves.
I am no longer a student, but I had endured long hours in school(extra classes) and in a rather run down college (8-4). Anyway, I don't see the 4pm thingy to be implemented anytime soon. No worries.
College is different, the mindset is already there. The maturity and demand from the a college student and high school student is different.
For example (this is unrelated but, yeah):
My youngest sister always complains that she'll always be the "baby" of the family(how right she is!) and how her 'problems' are of no comparison to the rest of the family. Her problems have been belittled because whenever she talks about hers we kinda say "But we have bigger problems ok...". What we fail to see is that her problems are still problems.
It's just that the problems given to her are problems fit for a person of her maturity/intellect.
Likewise with education.
The duration hours (AND CONTENT) for college and school vastly differ, especially with the education system being so regurgitation-of-information-like. Personally, I think it's a bit unfair to compare college and school.
Cleanliness-wise, what I meant was facial hygiene etc. Yes, cleanliness of the school plays an important part but my school is fairly clean, thanks. We have very few people that vandalize school property.
Yet, it feels really gross to be in the stinky uniform for so many hours. Think oily skin!
I'm not worried on my part, I've got two younger sisters who might have to endure the change.
Welcome to Malaysia!
Yeah, if only I had money.
Lol.
i experienced schooling hours till 4.15pm. My school, the royal military college(no,its a secondary school)
is under the Defense ministry. Tis the only school under it(besides one in port Dickson)
So all school directives are made by a board of directors. They implemented the 7.20-4.15 system when I was in form 3.
Let me tell you how tiring it is. Basicly almost the entire class was sleeping at the end of the day. (me included)
The abolished it to the normal system this year.
So yeah. That shows how stupid it is. How can a student study when he is sleeping? I think most of us are already pooped out by the current system as it is.
